Diesel spill in port area recovered using FoamFlex
AREA
CHALLENGE
The fire brigade recovered an oil spill in a port area. Coming from the open sea, it was essential to contain the spill before it reached potentially dangerous areas for the terrestrial ecosystem.
In March 2022, the tranquility of the Port of Granatello in Portici (Naples) was disturbed by the discovery of a large diesel stain. This stain, which covered an area of about 2 square kilometers, came from the open sea and posed a serious threat to the marine ecosystem and port activities.
Immediate action was crucial. The local Port Authority, in cooperation with Hippocampo, acted promptly. Their first move was the use of FoamFlex, a state-of-the-art oil-absorbent banner known for its effectiveness in dealing with spills of this type.
Bur the innovation didn’t end there. The use of a thermal drone provided a clear and detailed view of the entire polluted area. It provided valuable data on the stain's extent and density, enabling precise calculations for the required amount of FoamFlex to address the emergency.
This targeted strategy minimized resource use and significantly reduced intervention costs. Traditional methods, on the other hand, such as the use of skimmers, would have resulted in much higher costs and longer intervention times.
THE SOLUTION
T1 Piezometer
The combination of advanced technology, high-quality materials, and professional expertise ensured rapid and effective intervention. In less than 24 hours, the threat was neutralized, and the Port of Granatello returned to its normal operations, demonstrating once again the importance of being prepared and equipped with the right equipment in case of environmental emergencies.
